It is no secret how we Filipinos love chicken very much. But what if it is not the usual type of crispy-icious and juicy-licious Pinoy recipe that we can never outgrow? That I personally took as a challenge and to be very honest it was hard to deviate from the gold standard chicken that I used to know- be it fried or not. Peri-Peri Gill House is a casual type of restaurant that is popular for its Portuguese style grilled chicken. Wherever you go there are all sorts of chicken recipe that are worth-trying for and this one from Peri-Peri comes with their signature hot pepper sauces that mainly use the African birds eye chili. So now let me share you my dining experience at their branch in my hometown San Juan City. Allow me to start with their core product- the legendary Portuguese style grilled chicken!
1 Whole Per-Peri Chicken (Lemon & Garlic) PhP 490
These three recipes are equally good, meaning they have the quality of being the one of the best spit fire grilled chicken in town. For your information, among the three I abused my stomach with the Lemon and Garlic flavored grilled chicken. I wanted my chicken that way everyday that is quite related to my personality of being highly excitable at times. However, I cannot determine the Hot and Mild variants from each other had it not been for the flaglets defining which is which. The Hot one is not that spicy nor peppery hot for my palate and I certainly believe even among my seatmates. Really, I can hardly tell which is which. I had to use those imported sauces standing still on our table to better appreciate the overall taste.
Java Rice
This type of rice would really complement grilled chicken, so I am giving this a two thumbs up! I could not agree more with the way they serve it in huge plate perfect for six to eight person plus the fact that it is garlicky too.
Something worth adding and indulging for your order of Peri-Peri Chicken recipes. Mind you these sauces are made from all natural ingredients assuring each diner of freshness.
Grilled Shrimp Salad - Regular PhP180 Family PhP340
Garden Salad - Reg PhP180 Family PhP340
These salad dishes should be treated as our starters, right? But since we wanted our chicken to be served first, we have these platters divided after tasting those tasty and succulent chicken. I certainly love those mandarin oranges and almond flakes fro the Grilled Shrimp Salad though they are a bit underportioned. The Garden Salad, however, had all the nutrients your body needs- from very fresh leafy veggies, diced apples, raisins and nuts. One would surely ask for more. The poppyseed vinaigrette used for the said salads were definitely a plus factor! I shall be ordering these salads again on my future visits.
While others opted for this heavenly chocolate smoothie which to me is like a dessert already, my seatmate Sumi and I decided to have a smoothie that is so refreshing for a very hot afternoon. Something that would really quench our thirst big time in such a way that is not so sweet for us to need another glass of cold water.
Banana Strawberry Smoothie PhP65
I thought that strawberry will overpower the banana taste. I was so wrong but nonetheless very reinvigorating. Quite cheap for a tall glass like this. Cool!
Hooray for desserts! For some pleasant choices here's what we got. . .
New York Cheesecake PhP148
Blueberry Cheesecake PhP148
Strawberry Cheesecake PhP148
Whoa! That was actually a lot for a dessert. And guess what first snagged my attention? It was the serving size! 2-3 heads could actually dig in to these creamy and luscious sweet endings (per serving). I mean if you have been really full, you cannot (I daresay) finish this big slice. These cheesecakes are dense, have the right balance of sweetness and sourness but the crust needs some improvement though. Will repeat eating this kind of dessert with someone dear to me. I sure hope she'll love it!
Tiramisu PhP140
Choco Tiramisu PhP140
But wait, there's still more! These Italian desserts are also worth your time, though I find them too creamy for my tastebuds to handle that it somehow negate the idea of being a true tiramisu. Base was too fragile for me, maybe a little reinvention should be made to compensate for its appeal. Well, you be the judge. But since my afternoon delight at this restaurant, I firmly believe how servings are great at Peri-Peri and the wide selection from appetizers, salads, main course down to desserts are what really made them worth craving for. Until we meet again! This is a Grill House that deserves more visits from me, my family and my close friends as well.
