Permanent wave is a kind of hairstyle that I always wanted to wear though some find it too challenging and costly to maintain. For me it'll never go out of fashion. I was too agitated perming my hair before I graduated in college some 6 years ago; and since then I have this yearly ritual of subjecting my long hair to traditional perm in order to produce lovely small and big curls. This year is different from the last perming sessions I had for I just had my first-ever digital perm experience about a week ago! After the procedure I told myself that this is the kind of perm that women won't hate.
I gratefully accepted an invitation from Envy Me Salon & Spa days before January 2013 ends. In so doing, I was given the opportunity to try any of their services. What else would I desire? Of course it should be something I never had before. That day, I met Buddy who gladly welcomed my presence one weekday afternoon at their branch in Robinsons Galleria. He is the current Salon and Spa Manager of all the branches and this is their family business. Most of the time he stays there to supervise his staff and interacts with guests especially for first-timers. It is surprisingly impressive to note that though I went here on a Monday, the salon was filled with clients of different races.
Just to give you a brief background, Envy Me Salon & Spa was established in 2006 and the First Salon in the Philippines to offer the Brazilian Blowout. It was very well regarded by people in Davao and General Santos City and is now making its way to deliver impeccable services in the Metro Manila. They have all the services from the tresses to the toes- be it facial, massage, spa, hair and nail services. What excites my attention when I opened the glass door to this place was their capacious area, stylishly luxurious furniture and interiors and presentable staff.
Buddy, together with junior stylist Ian, studied my hair closely so as to gauge if digital perm and a little hair color would work best for me. Good thing that I badly needed a brand new perm since my hair is becoming straighter and straighter each day. Also, this is one way of celebrating the year of the water snake by having new look and style.
After carefully studying my scalp, hair and all I was then ushered to one of the hair wash stations to start shampooing me. Why does it feel so good? I felt so pampered getting my air washed with Morocco Argan Oil Shampoo. After several minutes, my hair was towel-dried and then blow-dried.
When all my hair strands are dry enough, Buddy and Ian started hair foiling and the application of mahogany hair color (dye). It was kind of tedious to watch as they are both meticulous in terms of which strands to include and not to include. This is another first time for me- hair coloring! We both agreed to just have highlights that will suit my hairstyle making sure that the result is subtle and not too trendy and flashy. I do not want my friends and relatives get shocked when they see me. Of course I still want to maintain the 'simple' look even if hair coloring is immensely popular.
Watch how I got easily amazed with this Roller Ball F far-infrared dome that is essential in recovering the hair color that was just applied to my selected hair strands. The mahogany dye had the hard time adapting with my hair because it is still considered virgin. After 20 minutes of interval heating/drying, dye successfully hold on to my hair.
After application of heat to my dyed hair for about 20 minutes or so using the magnificent rotating hood dryer, my head received a nice shampoo again in preparation for the perming procedure. After which, I underwent collagen treatment for about 15 minutes. This is responsible to add luster and shine to my hair.
Jerry, the senior stylist and his junior stylist proceeded with wrapping my hair with end papers with the use of rods too. They used medium sized rods to produce bigger curls that'll suit my face shape. Neutralizer was applied as well.
And then the moment I have been waiting for finally arrive. Before I reach this phase I had to take a brief snack while killing time as my hair digest all the physical and chemical applications it must receive. Thanks to Ian for the filling McDo snack I asked him to buy for me. Yes, you may ask their assistance especially if you are under a certain long hour activity. That meal prevented me from starvation, really. The strong wifi connection kept me productive and be abreast with what's in and out of the social media. The best salon equipped with useful and reliable facilities I've encountered so far.
This is how digital perming looks like. I was very eager to experience this process. It involves the use of hot-rollers which are hooked up to a heating system that produces heat. Heat was controlled depending on your hair type and justly monitored by thermostat control. Your hairstylist must be wary of not bringing the rollers too close to your scalp otherwise it will get burned which is definitely the worst thing you'll ever encounter in a salon. In my case, I opted that only the mid part up to the bottom of my hair will be permed so as to achieve softer and more natural look. I experienced few brief shocking moments whenever some rubber bands got melted due to heat and produce sharp, clicking sound. My digital perming lasted for almost an hour and that already involves the combination of cold and hot perm. Take note that the time it takes to perm the hair also depends on the hair salon's equipment and hair type. And that the curls of the hair is highly dependent upon the hair texture.
These are the products applied to my hair to achieve the look that I am currently enjoying. It took me 5 hours to get what I want, from hair coloring to digital perming. I invested long hours but truly worth it. I know some of you got envious of my experience, but the best way to deal with it is by simply visiting Envy Me Salon & Spa as soon as possible. Digital Perm will only cost you PhP1999 (any length).
Hair brings one's self-image into focus; it is vanity's proving ground. Hair is terribly personal, a tangle of mysterious prejudices. ~Shana Alexander
